CHIANTI Uncorked by Nomad.

LONDON 7 FEB 2008: LEADING European Internet experts are visiting a Newcastle company on Thursday to learn about broadband connections to moving trains.

The Challenged Internet Access Network Technology Infrastructure, CHIANTI, is a European research project group which has the task of developing internet technologies in environments where establishing a signal is difficult. They will be visiting the offices of fellow group member Nomad Digital.

The company has developed a system which allows a high speed broadband signal carrying Internet and e-mail signals to be passed to and from moving trains, even in tunnels. CHIANTI is a two-year project carried out by German research institute Technologiezentrum Informatik, Berlin-based communication software company Lyastiq, The Helsinki University of Technology and Nomad.

Nomad chief executive Graeme Lowdon said: "We are delighted to welcome this group of experts to the North East, it is a great opportunity for us to showcase the technology we have developed here. CHIANTI will improve wireless Internet communications to moving platforms such as buses or trains. It will do this, not by reinventing the wheel, but by looking at the existing best solutions already on offer. We have a tried and tested system and are happy to share our knowledge with our fellow CHIANTI members.''

Last year Nomad signed a contract with Virgin Trains to install its passenger wireless internet system on the operator's West Coast Main Line trains and also signed a deal to install its system on the Heathrow Express line. In partnership with T Mobile it operates a system for train operator Southern on the London to Brighton line.

It has also conducted the first successful broadband communication with a moving train in the US, in California, on a section of track along the route through Silicon Valley between San Francisco and San Jose. Nomad has also conducted successful trials in the Netherlands and is exploring opportunities in India, the Far East and the Middle East. mf 2 And last year, Nomad also announced its acquisition of QinetiQ Rail, the commercial rail division of QinetiQ plc, one of the world's leading defence and security technology companies.
