Nomad Digital Demonstrate High Speed Data Link for Passenger Entertainment .

Very high bandwidth connectivity to trains to allow file transfers for passenger entertainment systems.

Nomad Digital has announced that it has demonstrated very high data connectivity to trains allowing large content files to be transferred to and from trains. Demonstrations of the system have been carried out at data speeds up to and including 32 Mbps allowing very large data files, such as MPEG4 video files, to be transferred in a very short space of time.

Nomad's system works using a number of very small trackside 802.16 or (pre)WiMax radios which create a link to the train as it passes by. When the train is outside the coverage provided by the (pre)WiMax base stations it can switch seamlessly to other data networks including GPRS and 3G networks. Nigel Wallbridge of Nomad Digital commented "The ability to transfer such large data files in a very short space of time creates a number of opportunities for providers of on-train entertainment systems. Services can be kept up to date remotely with audio and video content without the requirement for manual distribution of content using CD-ROMs."
