Nomad Digital has announced that its high-speed data links to moving trains work even in tunnels. As part of its installation of a high-speed Internet access system on a train line in the UK technicians were investigating coverage through tunnels on the 15 November 2004. They noted that the 6Mb/s bi-directional link to the train was maintained as the train passed though a test tunnel at a speed in excess of 100kph.. In fact the coverage continued for several hundred metres beyond the exit of the tunnel.
Nomad's system works using a number of very small trackside 802.16 or (pre)WiMax radios which create a link to the train as it passes by. When the train is outside the coverage provided by the (pre)WiMax base stations it can switch seamlessly to other data networks including GPRS and 3G networks.
Nigel Wallbridge of Nomad Digital commented "Many rail operators are interested in providing high speed Internet access to their passengers. Those operators that have a high proportion of track in tunnels, underground or in deep-cuttings will be pleased that our system can provide coverage in these areas."
