How does the service work? The Nomad Digital
Rail train-borne WLAN system works by flooding rail carriages with a wireless
signal that allows passengers to connect to the internet via a control box
located on the train. Passengers can use any laptop or PDA fitted with a
standard WiFi adapter (IEEE802.11b). To ensure a reliable service the Nomad
system includes a number of features, such as seamless switching between
different data networks and technologies, ensuring continuity of connection
without the end user noticing any change.
What
makes the system different? Nomad Digital were the FIRST company in UK
to trial WiFi on board trains and the FIRST company to trial IEEE802.16 as a
backhaul technology for trains. This experience has allowed Nomad Digital to be
the FIRST company to deliver true bi-directional broadband connectivity to
trains (>6MB/s bi-directional) and the FIRST company to provide continuous
broadband connectivity to trains travelling through tunnels and/or underground.
Nomad Digital have also been the FIRST company to demonstrate high-speed data
link service (32Mbps bi-directional to/from train) for passenger entertainment
companies.
The Nomad Digital system can be used for providing
passengers with broadband internet connectivity aswell as a range of other
applications such as CCTV, on-train entertainment updates, OTMR integration
etc. For more details contact Nomad Digital.
