Nomad Digital rolls out integrated Internet, movies and an operational services network on Norwegian National Railways.Nomad Digital rolls out integrated Internet, movies and an operational services network on Norwegian National Railways.
London, UK, 22nd September 2009: UK specialist mobile operator NOMAD Digital has now launched service with Norway’s national passenger rail company, operating a high speed broadband communications system on its trains.

Nomad’s system will provide government-owned Norges Statsbaner, NSB, with services including passenger internet access and onboard entertainment including movies.  It will also allow future operational applications, such as retrieval of CCTV footage and passenger counting data.

Nomad’s system provides a seamless broadband connection, using all 3G mobile networks in Norway.

NSB, which serves more than 52 million passengers a year, has a frame-agreement with Nomad for its rolling stock of more than 280 trains, and has ordered 50 new Stadler trains for delivery, which will also be fitted with Nomad equipment and systems.

Passengers can now log on to a portal page for real time journey and key destination information. They will also be able to use this portal to access the internet to use commuting time for working, emailing, or enjoying films, games or music. Nomad and NSB selected content partners including SF-Anytime and Musicovery for films and music libraries. NSB leisure travellers may rent laptops in the bistro car of selected inter-city trains.

NSB will also have access to operational benefits to improve real time security, reduce costs and improve business efficiencies.

Nomad met NSB’s requirement for a moving train to switch between a number of different mobile operators, including nationwide broadband 450MHz coverage outside of 3G coverage in urban areas. The system can also switch to proprietary radio such as WiMAX to upgrade bandwidth in tunnels.

Nomad’s experience of multi-bearer switching and deploying WiMAX trackside networks made it the ideal partner for NSB which needed a system which could cope with Norway’s fluctuations in mobile signals and extensive tunnelled tracks.

Stein Nilsen, Senior Vice President and head of NSB Passenger Division said: “Choosing Nomad as a partner has enabled us to give our customers both the ability to connect and to entertain themselves, whilst travelling on long journeys. Nomad’s experience in the worldwide railway market has meant that they have consistently met all of our requirements, as well as been flexible and accommodating to our needs. Now we have increased the quality of passenger experience while enjoying new revenue channels.’’

Nigel Wallbridge, founder and Executive Chairman of Nomad Digital said: “This is the first time that a national railway in Europe has installed an integrated IP solution for their trains which allows Internet access, live passenger information, on-board entertainment and operational applications.  It has been a pleasure to work with NSB on bringing train travel into the 21st Century.  We know that many train operators are very interested in what NSB has achieved and we expect to announce orders from other operators soon.
