Nomad's equipment products can be divided into those that are installed onboard trains and those that are installed on the land side. In addition to hardware, Nomad has developed a range of embedded software for use in conjunction with its products or for use with third-party hardware products. These are detailed as follows;
Train-borne Products
Communication Control Unit (CCU)
The CCU is the heart of Nomad Digital's Mobile Broadband System. It automatically sets up and maintains a secure UDP tunnel to the NOC via available wide area links. For rail installations, one CCU is required on each train and is typically configured to support WiMAX and cellular links, with satellite and off-train WiFi links available as optional extras. The CCU contains a GPS receiver to track the location of the vehicle on which it is installed. It manages user connections and provides a web server to handle the user interface and local content. The CCU also manages and reports on the remaining vehicle-mounted components.
Communication Control Unit - Lite (CCU - Lite)
The CCU Lite is a cut-down version of Nomad Digital's CCU. Like the CCU, it automatically sets up and maintains a secure UDP tunnel to the NOC via available wide area links which are limited to two cellular channels. The CCU Lite also contains a GPS receiver to track the location of the vehicle on which it is installed. It manages user connections and provides a web server to handle the user interface and local content.
Communication Control Unit - SuperLite (CCU - SuperLite)
The CCU Super-Lite is a further cut-down and very low cost, version of Nomad Digital's CCU. Like the CCU, it automatically sets up and maintains a secure UDP tunnel to the NOC but does so with only one cellular channel. The CCU Lite also contains a GPS receiver to track the location of the vehicle on which it is installed. It manages user connections and provides a web server to handle the user interface and local content.
Carriage Box (CB)
The Nomad Digital carriage box provides a minimum of four Power over Ethernet switch ports to power WiFi access points and WiMAX radios. It also houses optional long-range Ethernet devices which enable wired inter-carriage links to operate reliably over existing train wiring.
Inter-carriage Link (ICL)
The Inter-carriage Link provides intelligent wireless connections between carriages. The inter-carriage link equipment monitors the status of its connection and powers down the wireless devices if the carriages are uncoupled. This helps to reduce the possibility of erroneous cross connections between adjacent trains. The ICL also allows the onboard LAN to re-configure automatically when new carriages are connected.
Land-Side Products
Home Agent Server
The Nomad Home Agent acts as the end point for secure communications to and from the CCU installed on the trains. It consists of a 1U rack-mounted server running a modified Linux kernel and Nomad's proprietary software.
Fleet Manager Server
Fleetmanager Server provides a web-based user interface to set up and manage the on-train, trackside and at-station equipment and to monitor their performance in real time. Fleetmanager Server is supplied pre-installed on a pair of 1U rack-mounted servers running a modified Linux kernel, Nomad proprietary software (with web-based user interface) and MySQL database.
