Infrastructure

Nomad’s solutions will typically use public networks to provide backhaul from the vehicles to the shore however there are occasions where lack of network coverage or the need for significant bandwidth means that public networks alone do not provide adequate bandwidth for the broadband applications. In these scenarios, Nomad can build network infrastructure in order to provide “infill”.

Network Design and Build

Nomad has deployed private proprietary networks around the world. To date these networks have been a mixture of proprietary WiMax and mobile Wimax (e802.16). Nomad will take responsibility for RF survey, network design, approval and installation and commissioning. Nomad will also monitor the network performance and provide on-going support and monitoring.

Mobile Telephony

Nomad’s mobile broadband solution can be used to significantly improve voice services on many rail routes. Not only can passengers and staff use Voice-over-IP (VoIP) services via the on-train WiFi network as an alternative voice service to cellular, Nomad’s system can also be used to improve cellular coverage.

Nomad’s solution uses in-carriage cellular picocells to provide the cellular signal and backhaul all voice traffic from these picocells over Nomad built trackside networks. Using their existing cellular handset, passengers wishing to make or receive a cellular voice call while in the carriage automatically connect to the in-carriage cellular picocell; they can then make (or receive) calls as normal. The voice traffic from these on-train calls is transferred into IP and transported from the train over the train-to-shore link with the dedicated trackside network and then routed to the appropriate MNO’s network. In order for the picocells to be able to broadcast, Nomad will need to partner with a third party MNO with access to cellular spectrum.
